Isle of Wight considers Cup bid
The America's Cup could be coming to Britain
Alinghi and Team New Zealand go head-to-head in Auckland
The Isle of Wight is keen to host the 2007 America's Cup following the surprise victory of Swiss yacht Alinghi.

Landlocked Switzerland is unable to stage the world's premier yachting event and is seeking somewhere to base its defence in four year's time.

And Cowes hopes to stage the event for the first time since 1851 - the first time the race was held, and the only time it has been held in Britain.

"We would love to attract it back to the island," said Isle of Wight council leader Shirley Smart. "It's the home of the competition and it would put the island on the map."

Mrs Smart admitted that other venues would have to co-host the event, with Solent neighbours Portsmouth and Southampton likely to be brought on board.

"I don't think it could be completely based in Cowes because of the infrastructure required for the cup," she said.

The Solent should have no problem holding the event as it is the home of British sailing.

The Isle of Wight is also used to the big occasion, with Cowes Week regarded as one of the biggest regattas in the world.

But the bid will have some stiff European competition, with France, Spain and Italy all seeking to hold the event.
