| Monday, 15 July, 2002, 10:48 GMT 11:48 UK Richards set for 'biggest challenge' ![]() Richards (right) has raced with Tracy Edwards (centre) Emma Richards will fly the flag for Britain in the 2002-03 Around Alone yacht race. The 27-year old announced her decision to compete in the 28,000-mile round-the-world voyage on Monday. Richards is the only Briton in the race, which starts in Rhode Island in September and calls in England, South Africa, New Zealand and Brazil, before returning to the USA in April 2003.
Of the 18 registered skippers, she is the youngest and also the only woman. Richards, who has made a name for herself in classics like the Transat Jacques Vabre and the Volvo Ocean Race, will take part in the Open 60 Class I. "I have no doubt that this will be the challenge of my life," she said. "As well as facing some great competitors and top class boats, the race is going to be both physically and mentally demanding. "We will be in the Southern Ocean a long time, so I know this will be the hardest sailing I have ever experienced. "But I'm very lucky to be taking part in the race in a very competitive boat, and with a highly-experienced shore crew." | Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Sailing stories now: Links to more Sailing stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
