More awards for MacArthur

Yet more awards for MacArthur's trophy cabinet
Record-breaking sailor Ellen MacArthur has been named Yachtsman of the Year at the British Nautical Awards.

MacArthur enjoyed a phenomenal 2001, becoming the youngest person ever to single-handedly sail around the world when she came second in the Vendee Globe race.

Her endeavours over the past year were fully appreciated by members of the Yachting Journalists' Association and the Royal Yachting Association, whose votes counted towards her latest award.

She also collected the Challenge Business Offshore Yachtsman of the Year award at the prestigious black-tie award.

The two awards add to her already growing collection of accolades.

Last year, MacArthur was awarded an MBE, finished runner-up to David Beckham as BBC Sports Personality of the Year and was named the International Sailing Federation's Female World Sailor of the Year.

"It is wonderful to be recognised again with the BNA's premier award," she said.

"However, I accept it on behalf of my team at Offshore Challenges, our title sponsor Kingfisher, and so many people from inside the sailing world who have helped me on my way since I stood here in 1995 as Young Sailor of the Year.

"Solo sailor maybe, but alone I have not been."

MacArthur revealed on Thursday her intention to sail around the world as fast as possible in the Jules Verne race next year.

But this time she will be part of a crew of 12 on the gigantic catamaran "Kingfisher 2".

Elsewhere, teenage sisters Emma and Victoria Rawlinson saw off tough competition from top-ranked adult sailors to pick up the WS Atkins Inshore Yachtsman of the Year Award.

The pair, from Farnham in Surrey, were also honoured with the MDL YJA Young Sailor of the Year Award.

The Peters Plc Power Yachtsman of the Year Award went to Ian Sanderson, of Lymington, Hants, and Peter Dredge, of Southampton.

The duo set nine world endurance records for motor powered boats last year.
