Steve Fossett has shaved almost 30 minutes off the record for sailing across the English Channel.

The American millionaire and his crew of 11 on the catamaran PlayStation set the new mark on Monday.

They sailed from Cowes on the Isle of Wight to Dinard in France in 6 hours, 21 minutes and 54 seconds.

The time was 27 minutes and 25 seconds faster than the old record set in 1997 by Briton Tracy Edwards.

Fossett broke the record for crossing the north Atlantic Ocean in October.
