Campbell beats Drysdale on Thames

Alan Campbell beat rival Mahe Drysdale by 12 seconds in London

Coleraine single scull oarsman Alan Campbell saw off world champion Mahe Drysdale to win the Wingfield Sculls Race on the River Thames on Thursday.

Campbell won the 4.25-mile event - on the university boat race course - by 12 seconds from his New Zealand rival.

Drysdale pipped Campbell to the gold at the World Championships in Poznan in August in a race which saw both men break the world record.

"We have a good rivalry. I have shown I am a tough competitor," said Campbell.

"Mahe has had the upper hand on me so it was nice to get one over on him.

"I have put a marker down and shown I am a strong rival."
