Great Britain's top men returned to a coxless four and were one of 12 crews reaching semi-finals in the third World Cup event in Lucerne.

With Tom James in for Alex Partridge (knee) the four defied Slovenia to move into Saturday's semi-final.

Sculler Alan Campbell and the double of Stephen Rowbotham and Matt Wells also reached Olympic-class openweight semis.

Lightweights won all three Olympic boat classes - men's and women's doubles and men's four - for the first time ever.

The women's quadruple scull, with Debbie Flood back from illness, also took their heat to move directly into their final on Sunday.

The leading openweight men were part of an experimental eight which won the last World Cup event in Amsterdam three weeks ago.

Britain's first-choice men's eight, who took bronze behind them in Amsterdam, qualified for Saturday's semi in second place in their heat.

Men's pair Colin Smith and Matt Langridge took gold in the World Cup opener in Linz before moving into the "super eight".

They could not qualify automatically in Lucerne, though, and were forced to win a repecharge to secure their semi-final spot.
