British Olympic Association chairman Colin Moynihan says the Government must reveal its budget for the 2012 Olympics soon to end damaging speculation. On Friday the BBC reported that the cost of staging the London Games could rise to as much as 9bn.
Moynihan told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek: "It should be (announced) as soon as possible - this debate is not helping the whole Olympic project.
"It should then be accountable to the public at large."
Games organisers have pointed out that some reports add the cost of redeveloping 500 acres of East London to the overall cost.
Moynihan said: "When they do come forward, we will see if they have included in that budget a huge regeneration project in the East End.
"What I have asked for is that there should be absolute clarity about the costs that are going to be required to deliver the Games on the Olympic Park."
Moynihan is adamant the BOA's 600m budget to prepare Team GB for 2012 will not be reduced to help the Government with their plans.
"That was a clear commitment from the Chancellor in his Budget last year, and I'm sure he'll stick to it," he said.
"We fought hard to get the 600m we need as a budget to deliver our target of fourth place (in the medal table).
"We've got that - we're not going to exceed it."
