Rogge supports DNA sampling to crack down on drugs cheats |
The International Olympic Committee plans to increase testing for banned substances at the London Olympics to cover around one in every two athletes. The IOC envisages 5,000 athletes will be tested in 2012, compared to 4,500 at the Beijing Games next year and 3,700 tests in Athens in 2004.
"The IOC will augment tests," said IOC president Jacques Rogge.
The IOC will also recommend increasing bans for first-time offenders from the current two years to four years.
In exceptional cases life bans could be handed down.
Rogge added that the entourages of the athletes would also be more carefully scrutinised while there will be an increase in unannounced out-of-competition tests.
