Kaspars Astasenko played for Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL

Belfast Giants have signed Latvian defenceman Kaspars Astasenko just before the transfer deadline.

The former NHL star is expected to make his debut for the Giants when they play Cardiff Devils in Belfast's Odyssey Arena on Saturday night.

The game is the first leg of the Challenge Cup semi-final but also counts as an Elite League fixture.

Astasenko has experience in American and European leagues, and played 23 NHL matches for Tampa Bay Lightning.

"I really like our defence core at the minute and Kaspars will be adding to it," said Giants coach Doug Christiansen.

"We will be looking for him to add depth, experience and skill. This will allow us to move Mike Hoffman to forward on occasions as well."
