Newcastle Vipers closed the gap on the Cardiff Devils to five points after a penalty shoot-out win.

Ed Courtenay put the hosts 1-0 up in the second period firing home after good work from Jeff Hutchins and Chris McAllister.

Mike Hartwick drew the Devils level in the third period to send the game into overtime.

Courtenay was the only successful penalty taker in the eventual shoot-out.

The two teams meet again at the Metro Arena on Saturday at 1830 GMT.
