Elite League leaders Sheffield Steelers needed a penalty shootout to beat Edinburgh Capitals 5-4. Mark Hurtubise shot the home side into an early lead but Jonathan Phillips Doug Sheppard, Ashley Tait and Robert Dowd hit back for the Steelers. However, Martin Cingel, Iain Bowie and Hurtubise struck to take the game into overtime, only for the visitors to triumph on penalties. On Saturday, the Capitals lost 6-3 at Newcastle Vipers. David Longstaff got the Geordies off to a good start only for Hurtubise to strike back from a powerplay. Ed Courtenay and Edinburgh's Kyle Horne traded goals before Derek Campbell gave the home side a 3-2 lead which they held onto going into the third period. Two goals in the opening five minutes of the third session put the home side well in command, with Jeff Hutchins and Campbell doing the damage. Hurtubise gave the Capitals a glimmer of hope but Longstaff completed the scoring to halt a poor run of home results for the Vipers.
