Jody Lehman saved six penalties for the Steelers in defeat |
Sheffield Steelers could only claim a point as they threw away a two-goal lead to lose 4-3 at Basingstoke Bison after overtime and penalty shots. Steelers' Rod Sarich opened the scoring as the first period ended level at 1-1. The Steelers then took command when Jeff Legue and Doug Shepherd netted, but Brent Hughes and Danny Stewart hit back for the Bison to set up overtime. With the extra period scoreless, it took three rounds of penalties before Greg Chambers won it for the Bison. Head coach Dave Matsos told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I thought we had our chances to win. "I thought their goalie [Kevin Reiter] played well when he had to, that's what he's there for and he's been the catalyst of their team.
"We're a first-place hockey club and we have to play like a first-place club every night and we can't have any passengers. "There was good goal tending in the shoot-out, with nine shooters and very few goals." The result leaves the Steelers still top of the league standings by two points. The two sides meet again on Sunday at IceSheffield. Face-off is at 1800 GMT.
