Hull Stingrays have signed Ukrainian forward Konstantin Kalmikov to replace Jake Riddle, who was released by the club last week. Rays coach Rick Strachan says the 30-year-old, who has played in this country before for Nottingham, is just the sort of player they need. Strachan told BBC Radio Humberside: "He's a big man and in great shape. "He's played 240 games in the American League and he's got a great shot and that's going to help us a ton." Kalmikov, born in Kharkov in the old USSR, has played in the United States for AHL and ECHL teams. And he iced for Nottingham in 2004/05, playing 58 games scoring 25 goals and 18 assists for the Panthers before moving back to play in the States. | Toronto Maple Leafs 3rd round NHL draft pick 1996 Scored 32 goals for Louisiana in 2003 Has played 13 years in pro hockey | Strachan says Kalmikov is his sort of player, adding: "He opens up spaces for other guys. "He's a power-play guy and he's good in all areas of the rink. He's got a great shot. That's what he's all about. "You have to watch him. He can score goals and he will score goals. "Give him a chance and he'll bury it because he's got an NHL shot." Kalmikov could make his debut against his old club next weekend when the Stingrays play at home to Nottingham in the league before Sunday's Challenge Cup trip to Coventry.
