Clarke lifted the play-off trophy in 2007 |
Nottingham Panthers forward David Clarke says the club's fans were one of the main reasons why he came back to the National Ice Centre. Clarke spent four seasons in Nottingham before playing in Italy last year. But Panthers coach Corey Neilson has persuaded the GB international, 26, to return to the Elite League next season. Winger Clarke told BBC Radio Nottingham: "The fans are amazing. When I did decide to come back, Nottingham was the only place I wanted to sign." The Peterborough-born star joined Nottingham in the summer of 2003 and won the Challenge Cup under Paul Adey, scoring 30 points in 44 matches. | I absolutely love playing in Nottingham and the club has become imbedded in me |
Clarke added: "I remember my first ever game against Sheffield Steelers and it was sold out. "It introduced me to the intense rivalry between the two teams and it is something that stays with you forever." He went on to be one of the Elite League's leading points scorers over four years including a career-high 61 points in 60 games in 2004/05. Clarke captained the side two years later, leading Panthers to their first play-off championship for 18 years. He was a goalscorer in the final against Cardiff as Panthers went on to win the trophy on penalty shots. Clarke's performances attracted the interest of scouts across Europe and he joined up with Alleghe in Italy for the start of 2007 season. His season was interrupted by a broken leg but he returned to help Alleghe into the finals of the Italian Cup and into the play-offs. Clarke said: "When I returned from Italy, Panthers kindly let me train with them to keep in shape for the World Championships. "I watched the Cardiff quarter-final with my son Morgan and we both loved it. "Sitting there watching the game in such an amazing facility with such amazing fans made the decision for me. "I absolutely love playing in Nottingham and the club has become imbedded in me."
