Kevin Bergin hit a hat-trick to give Nottingham a priceless Challenge Cup final first leg lead against Sheffield. The home side took the lead when Doug Sheppard fired in only for Sean McAslan to level and Bergin to edge the visitors ahead on the powerplay.
Joey Talbot hauled the Steelers level at 2-2 but a Bergin double put the Panthers 4-2 up before Robert Dowd pulled one back to make it 4-3.
But Ryan Shmyr and McAslan struck to round off an impressive Panthers win.
The second leg is at the National Ice Centre on Wednesday, 20 February.
