Andy McDonald's powerplay goal early in the first period gave the Ducks a vital lead, before netminder Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 11 key saves.

The result was another blow to Canadian fans, who have not celebrated a Stanley Cup since Montreal won back in 1993.

Niedermayer had been on the New Jersey Devils side which beat the Ducks in their only previous Stanley Cup finals, in 2003.

And the Ducks captain added more silverware to collection by winning the Conn Smythe trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs.

His brother Rob had given the Ducks a 2-0 first period lead before Daniel Alfredsson pulled one back for the Senators midway through the second.

But any Ottawa momentum was snuffed out when defenceman Chris Phillips tried to bring the puck out from behind his own net, only for it to get caught in netminder Ray Emery's skate and slip into his own goal.

Alfredsson again pulled the Senators to within one with a shorthanded tally but the Ducks hit back 50 seconds later on a goal from Francois Beauchemin to send Anaheim into the final period with a 4-2 cushion.

Moen and Corey Perry ended any chance of an Ottawa comeback with third period goals.
