Cardiff Devils captain Ed Patterson has stepped up to become the Elite League side's new player-coach. Current head coach Dave Whistle is expected to help former NHL forward Patterson prepare for next season.
Winger Dave Matsos will become assistant coach to ex-Pittsburgh Penguin Patterson, 32, with the pair expected to carry on icing.
Devils brought their 2004-5 season to an end last weekend, finishing fourth in the Elite League play-offs.
