Cardiff Devils opened their Elite League play-off campaign with a 4-2 home win over Sheffield Steelers. The home side struck first with a Dave Cousineau power play goal but Verio Sacratini equalised 37 seconds later.
Eric Anderson put the Steelers ahead again but the Devils claimed a precious victory with goals from Jon Cullen, Russ Romaniuk and John Craighead.
Both teams meet again in the return fixture in Sheffield on Sunday, 20 March.
