Theo Fleury celebrated a hat-trick on his Belfast Giants debut |
Star signing Theo Fleury has said he will be disappointed if the Belfast Giants do not finish the season as Elite League champions. The NHL legend scored a hat-trick and also had four assists on his Giants debut as they beat Edinburgh Capitals 11-2 in Belfast on Saturday.
"We had a good night, but we must keep on winning. Successful teams always focus on the next match" said Fleury.
"We want to win the title and anything less would be a disappointment."
The big-name signing made an instant impact, finding the net twice in the first three minutes, with the Giants going on to record their biggest ever win in the league.
"I did not have any expectations going into the game so I was not that nervous," said the Olympic gold medallist.
"When I get nervous I tend to try too much. The puck seemed to follow me around all night and hopefully that is a sign of things to come.
"It was a great enthusiastic crowd who were appreciative. As a professional athlete you want that sort of support."
Saturday's win took the Giants five points clear of Newcastle at the top of the league but all their rivals have games in hand.
"We have just two games over the next 14 days and it wil be a big test to stay sharp," added 37-year-Fleury.
