Have Your Say on Horse Racing
Send in your turf talk, tips and racing debate.

Glorious Goodwood staged five days of top-quality racing action.

On Saturday, Russian Rhythm won her third Group One win in a row to claim the Nassau Stakes.

Other highlights of the meeting included Persian Punch's win over Jardines Lookout in the Goodwood Cup and Pat Eddery's triumph in the Sussex Stakes on Reel Buddy.

But what were your favourite moments from Glorious Goodwood?

Wasn't it great to see Pat Eddery winning on outsider Reel Buddy
Paul Williams, England
I've just enjoyed two great weeks of racing, Ascot, Goodwood and Galway. The Balding/Carson Show added considerably to the enjoyment. They are naturals.
Louis Power, Ireland

Brilliant coverage; thank you BBC Team. I do wish your punting pro (whose name escapes me) would make more effort to get horses' names right and to stop referring to them as 'it'. They are not machines. Highlights: Pat, Persian Punch and brave filly Russian Rhythm.
Diana Donald, UK

Why do the jockeys continue to keep trying to go up the rail, when in nearly every race at Goodwood there has been some sort of trouble? Nearly every winner has had a trouble free run down the outside.
Andrew, England

Wasn't it great to see Pat Eddery winning on outsider Reel Buddy. Obviously Chris Nicoll lost on the race but I didn't. Well done Reel Buddy and Pat.
Paul Williams, England

I was at Goodwood on Thursday to witness the great tussle between Persian Punch and Jardines Lookout. The gloves came off at the two furlong pole and you have to admire the courage that they both showed going for the line. I myself had backed Jardines Lookout but I was amongst those who applauded Persian Punch's tenacity and courage, great racing
Mark Povey, England,UK

I think that Alamshar needs to prove himself in the Arc in October
Karim Premji, UK
After seeing the weather at Goodwood today, it reminds me of my first visit to Goodwood on Stewards Cup day in 1979, I had the winner REPEATIOUS, it came out of the fog to beat SOVEREIGN ROSE ridden by Willy Carson, any chance you could show this again?.
Chris Morrison, England

Congratulations to Pat Eddery on his Group One victory on Reel Buddy in the Sussex Stakes. But I think the class of the race was sub standard when most of the protagonists finished in a heap and the likes of Kalaman and Where or When were Non Runners. Meanwhile Saturdays Stewards Cup can go to Fire Up The Band despite not being out for about three months.
Barry Comerford, Scotland

A poem for two great presenters.

At Goodwood, Ascot and all big meetings, Clare and Willie with cheerful greetings, but best of all from Goodwood glorious. My favourite horses were both victorious, at ten-years-old when it comes to the crunch, there's no one braver than Persian Punch. And grandfather Pat in his final year put my reel buddy in sizzling gear. Both winners there and that's a fact, but can't compare with your double act. The Balding girl and the Scots man whose cheeky grin gains many a fan. When standing on his bolder and nearly reaches our Clare's shoulder so carry on your both in charge rivals so little and large.
Walter Muir, Scotland

It is about time that weight for age allowances were looked at this far into the season
Matt Larkins, England
I think that Alamshar needs to prove himself in the Arc in October. I believe that a rematch with Dalakani will prove difficult to deal with. I believe that Dalakani was unlucky to loose his unbeaten record at the Curragh and a rematch will favour the French Colt.
Karim Premji, UK

Alamshar is without doubt a good horse, possibly one of the better three-year-old middle distance horses in recent times.

However, I find it hard to belive that he would have finished any closer than third in the King George had it not been for the excessive weight for age allowance that the three-year-olds received from the older counterparts.

It is about time that weight for age allowances were looked at this far into the season or have group one races for four-year-olds plus only, as an incentive to keep good class older horses in training.

As for Reel Buddy winning the Sussex Stakes, it shows what a poor crop of three-year-old milers there are this season. A fully fit Where or When must have won.

If you only follow one horse for the rest of the season then this has to be the one.
Matt Larkins, England

The first two horses to win yesterday were number one in the first race and number six in the second race. The same two numbers have won today, so number two might win the next race. Here's hoping lightning can strike twice.
Anthony Fraser, Scotland

A brilliant ride by a brilliant and humble jockey in Pat Eddery
Chris Nicoll, England
You need to have someone do some work on the forecaster. The factors are reasonable, but the weightings are obviously totally wrong. That is why it comes up with some bizarre selections from time to time. But I am thoroughly enjoying Goodwood.
Nik Humble, UK

Whatever happened to the horse DUBLIN that won last year's Vintage Stakes? A brilliant ride by a brilliant and humble jockey in Pat Eddery just now in the Sussex Stakes - if only more sportsmen and women could grace their sport with such dignity and decorum!
Robert Fenwick, U.K.

Reel Buddy wins the Group One big race of the day at 20/1. All that is needed now is to enter the donkey's from Blackpool beach donkey rides to win the big races in the UK. Such are the depths of shame and depravity British Racing has sunk into.
Chris Nicoll, England

Currently, when horses are withdrawn on the day, the result is that bookmakers can pay out on a reduced number of places, as happened at Goodwood today. They should be obliged to pay out as if the number of runners was as advertised in the morning paper.

This would get rid of any suggestions that they are paying trainers to withdraw horses in order to reduce their liabilities and cheat the public.
Tom Swallow, England

I was in the bookies on Saturday and I wasn't the only one who jumped at 7/1. Had everyone forgotten his win in Ireland in the rain over Brian Boru? This horse has shown great spirit and I am convinced he is one to look out for.
Simon Adams, UK

Alamshar was brilliant. The horse is from great stock and the product of an immense breeding operation
N Adams, UK

Nice to see the great Steve Cauthen on the Beeb at Goodwood. He was the true professional who always gave every horse the best ride possible even if this was against what the trainer and owner told him.
James Miller, UK

What a fantastic performance by Alamshar. I didn't back him in the Irish Derby, but at those odds on Saturday, he was an unbelievable bet. The Arc and The Breeders Cup can't come soon enough.

If he keeps improving the way he has, who knows what he can achieve? Can't imagine him ever going off at odds of 13/2 again though!
Jonathan Robinson, Antrim

Alamshar is one of the best horses at this time. His last two victories show how great this horse is.
Nawras, Sheffield

Alamshar's triumph was the ultimate display of shear thoughbred talent. To beat his generation's best and also what the older generation could muster by such a convincing manner shows J. Oxx's three-year-old Irish Derby winner that he is definitely the racehorse of 2003.
David Barker, St.Helens

Alamshar was brilliant. The horse is from great stock and the product of an immense breeding operation. The 'Sinndar' are connections working together perfectly again. It will be interesting to see if Alamshar will come up against Dalakhani in the autumn.
N Adams, UK

Those who say British racing is the best in the world are right
Chris Coates, Australia

Alamshar will be a hard horse to beat from here on out through the Arc and maybe the Breeders Cup turf. Pat Eddery's worst ride was on Caerleon in the Irish Derby when he clearly had the best horse and boxed himself in on the rail and never gave the horse a chance.
Phil, USA

I listened to the BBC World Service coverage of the King George. Alamshar must certainly have some claims as a top notch colt now. I first took an interest in Pat Eddery when he was an apprentice. He beat the handicapper many times with a horse named Alvaro. It's the best race I have ever seen.

Finally, those who say British racing is the best in the world are right. They are all dead flat tracks out here. No courses to compare with Goodwood or a challenge like Epsom. On a really important point though, in Australian racing they race their horses regularly, and most champion three-year-olds are kept in training. So we get good clashes between different generations. European horses are pampered and raced too lightly!
Chris Coates, Australia

There could have been a suspicion that Alamshar owed his victory over Dalakhani to tenacity as much as class, but he proved his ability by demolishing a pretty good field yesterday. Instead of damning this brilliant performance with faint praise, can't we be thankful that we have a horse who has actually exceeded expectations in each of his last two races?

So often highly touted classic animals either fail to meet aspirations or prove to be one race wonders. I think anyone who loves horse racing, as opposed to just betting, longs for new champions, and is saddened when one's frailty is exposed (eg Galileo). Let's rejoice for now, not least as it's John Oxx, and not the O'Brien or Godolphin battalions who are sitting on top of the pile.
David Bell, Milton Keynes, UK

Dalakhani is a far better horse than Alamshar and was unlucky to loose the Irish derby. The Aga has two of the finest colts in Europe and they are certain to take on any opposition (3yrs) they face, but if they clash again then my vote is for Dalakhani
Munir Mitha, USA

Alamshar's performance merited a showing on ESPN as part of their build up to the Breeder's Cup. Even their presenters agreed this was the best field assembled anywhere in the world this year.

Alamshar was imperious, quickening away. But on that ground, other than Sulamani, what did he beat? A sub-standard Derby winner? Two workmanlike St Leger winners? A workmanlike Coronation Cup winner? These group ones were easier to win than many.

Before over-hypimg him, let's wait and see in October, when Alamshar's defining moment arrives, whether his back injury returns to plague him or whether the 'over the top' cliche is rolled out. He is arguably the best around just now (Dalakhani still might have something to say about that), but look at Nashwan - he ended up only third in the ratings by the end of his three year old career.

I hope Alamshar goes on from here, but in recent years only Lamtarra and Sinddar have failed to disappoint in the autumn. Maybe the long season does have an effect, but in the long run, if Alamshar fails and Dalakhani wins the Arc, people will have short memories ...
Andrew, Boston, USA

I felt privileged after watching the King George at Ascot as I believe we have seen a quite outstanding colt in Alamshar. He was ridden all wrong at Epsom but Johnny Murtagh was at his brilliant best and the race was all over the top of the straight.

He may well prove to be one of the best three-year-olds we have seen in Europe for a few years. Hopefully he will remain in training at four and completely fulfil his massive potential. Bring on Alamshar v Dalakhani just one more time to see who is truly the best of HRH Aga Khan's two outstanding colts.
Craig Silmaril, UK

I think that the North should be given the chance to hold 'Royal Ascot' during the rebuilding - perhaps somewhere like York.
Betty Felis, Newcastle upon Tyne
