Maguire faces further surgery
Adrian Maguire
Maguire has been plagued by bad luck at Cheltenham
Irish jockey Adrian Maguire faces another operation after surgeons found further damage to his broken neck.

Maguire will be out of action until the beginning of next season taking a tumble on Luzcadou in the Warwick National Crudwell Cup on Saturday.

He had an operation to correct the broken vertebrae in his neck on Sunday night.

But surgeons want to operate again after finding more damage, according to trainer Ferdy Murphy.

"They've done some more X-rays and he's going to have another operation on Thursday," said Murphy.

"They found further bone damage which they hadn't seen before which has got to be sorted out.

"He was not very happy when the surgeon told him the news, he has had some unbelievably bad luck and you've got to feel sorry for him.

"At least he'll be back next season and I'll have to make sure we've got some good horses for him to ride to make up for the fact that he keeps missing out."

The injury forced Maguire to bypass the Cheltenham Festival, a meeting he has missed in three of the last six years.

The 30-year-old sat out the 1995 event after his mother died, missed out a year later after breaking a collarbone, then a broken arm shattered his hopes in 1997.
