Paul Carberry celebrates victory on Pandorama in the Lexus Chase |
Pandorama made up for a disappointing Hennessy performance to win the Grade One Lexus Chase at Leopardstown. Paul Carberry, who pulled Noel Meade's seven-year-old up at Newbury, had no problems on Tuesday as Pandorama streaked away for a decisive victory. Money Trix, runner-up last year, was second again while Joncol repeated his 2009 third place. Earlier, Jessica Harrington's Bostons Angel showed plenty of guts to land the Grade One Fort Leney Novice Chase. Robbie Power produced Bostons Angel with a well-timed run to shade the lead at the top of the straight. Favourite Thegreatjohnbrowne fought back to edge level at the last but Bostons Angel had more left on the run-in and won at 14-1. Victory in the Lexus was Pandorama's first win at the highest level in full company as he saw off Money Trix. Twice a Grade One winner as a novice last term, Pandorama was sent off the 7-2 joint favourite along with Cooldine for the three-mile contest. The Listener took up his traditional front-running role as Carberry was happy to sit in the chasing pack until beginning to work his way into a position three fences from home. Coming down to the last, Carberry's mount looked all over the winner and despite pecking slightly on landing, he accelerated away on the run-in. | 606: DEBATE |
Last year's runner-up Money Trix tried to go in pursuit but he was no match for the winner and had to settle for second again. Cooldine was pulled up before the last fence while Tony McCoy's Kempes was a faller two from home and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year hurt his left wrist in the fall. The 15-times champion opted not to go to hospital but will have to get the go-head from the doctor if he is to partner Big Buck's in the Long Walk Hurdle at Newbury on Wednesday. "Tony McCoy has left the track with his left wrist packed in ice," said Dr Walter Halley, medical officer for the Irish Turf Club. "He's not going to go for an X-ray, he's going to fly straight home and he will get one if it is required when he gets back," "He will have to be cleared by the doctor to ride tomorrow back in Britain." Pandorama is now as low as 10-1 with Coral for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and trainer Meade was pleased to see his runner bounce back to his best. "We are back on track and will aim for the (Irish) Hennessy back here if he stays right. We are still dreaming of the Gold Cup," he said.
