Jockey AP McCoy wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year
BBC Sports Personality of the Year Tony McCoy claimed two wins at Kempton on Tuesday as he returned to racing.
McCoy urged his mount, the 10-1 shot Blue Monster, to a narrow verdict over favourite Dark Lover.
The Northern Irishman, the first jockey to win the BBC award, demonstrated his strength in the saddle to win in the Surrey track's second race of the day.
And he followed up in the fourth, guiding 7-4 favourite Giorgio Quercus home from Bermuda Boy.
Blue Monster, who is owned and trained by Nicky Henderson, won by a head.
The six-year-old horse was winning for the first time in his career after five defeats.
Giorgio Quercus, running for the first time in 612 days, made it two for McCoy and Henderson as he prevailed by a length and a quarter on a special all-weather card on the flat run for National Hunt horses hit by the big freeze.
"He hadn't run for a long time, but he's quite straightforward and I just wanted to make sure he finished his race," said McCoy.
The 36-year-old rider secured nearly 42 per cent of the vote as he won the BBC award on Sunday night.
