Kauto Star won a record fourth straight King George in 2009 |
Jockey Noel Fehily faces a wait to hear whether he will be fit to ride Kauto Star when he goes for a record fifth King George VI Chase win on Boxing Day. Fehily was selected to replace injured rider Ruby Walsh at Kempton, but hurt his wrist in a fall on Friday. His agent Chris Broad said the wrist may not be be broken, as first feared. "It is still quite swollen and the doctor has put a cast on but it may be more swelling and bruising than an actual break," said Broad. "The specialist has given quite an upbeat report, it's just difficult to assess as it is very swollen." Broad said the jockey would probably know more when he is examined again on Tuesday. Fehily was riding Rivaliste for trainer Paul Nicholls when he came down in a handicap chase at Newbury Champion jockey Tony McCoy is rated favourite by bookmakers to replace him on Kauto Star if he cannot return in time. Ruby Walsh, who rode Kauto Star to each of his four previous King George wins, was ruled out earlier this month after breaking his leg. | 606: DEBATE |
McCoy had sympathy for Fehily, telling At The Races: "For Noel to have taken his chance like he has and then for this to happen, that's the disappointment of being a jump jockey - it's very much a day-to-day basis you live by. "I don't know how bad it is, but obviously it's not good and worst of all is the timing of it, he was doing better than ever."
