Kauto Star's jockey Ruby Walsh has undergone a successful operation after suffering a double fracture to his leg in a fall at Down Royal on Saturday. The Irishman will miss the ride on Kauto in the King George VI Stakes at Kempton on Boxing Day, where he is expected to be replaced by Tony McCoy. "They are happy with the way the operation went and he's doing well," said Walsh's sister and agent Jennifer. "I haven't a clue how long he'll be out for. I haven't spoken to Ruby yet." Walsh had only returned to action in August after fracturing his arm in three places in a crashing fall from Celestial Halo at Aintree's Grand National meeting in April.  | 606: DEBATE |
Saturday's fall ruined what had been a highly successful day as Walsh had won the two main races on the card, including on dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kauto Star. The 10-year-old was making his seasonal reappearance at the Northern Ireland track. Walsh would have been bidding to land a record fifth consecutive King George on the celebrated French-bred gelding at Kempton. Bookmakers make champion jockey McCoy the odds-on favourite to take the ride ahead of Barry Geraghty and Sam Thomas. Connections could also decide to give Kauto Star a run in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury on 27 November.
