Fran Berry won the stayers' race for Ireland on Bernie The Bolt |
Ireland edged out Europe to win the Shergar Cup team event at Ascot The Irish triumphed with 80 points, eight ahead of Europe with the Rest of the World on 45 and Great Britain on 43 in front of a 28,000 crowd. Olivier Peslier won the last race for Europe on the 4-1 chance Gramercy, trained by Michael Bell. Irish jockey Fran Berry rode runner-up Gene Autry and that was enough for him to claim the Silver Saddle for the rider with most points. "I was probably the happiest man ever to come second," joked Berry as he collected his award. It was a second straight win for Ireland, captained by Richard Hughes with Pat Smullen as the third team member. The competition features three-strong teams from around the world. Although an Irish rider only won one of the six races, they clinched team victory with a series of places.
