Irish jockey Jason Behan and trainer Eamon Tyrell have been referred to the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) over the Newcastle run of Casela Park. The horse was making good progress in a seven furlong handicap when he swerved sharply from left to right. He finished sixth of the 12 runners and afterwards stewards referred the jockey and trainer to the BHA. Tyrrell defended Behan and told the Racing Post: "The horse is a difficult ride. He has been all his life." BHA head of communications Paul Struthers said stewards held an inquiry into the running and riding of Casela Park. They referred Behan and Tyrell for being in breach of a rule which covers "a horse which has intentionally been restrained and not let down". "The matter will be investigated and any future disciplinary panel inquiry amounts to a rehearing," said Struthers. "As always in these cases there is a possibility that the sub category [which covers a potential breach of the rules] might change, depending on the results of that investigation." The race was won by 40-1 shot Tukitinyasok. Top-weight Casela Park who has previously won when ridden from the front, was less prominent in this second race for his new yard. "The reason he didn't make the running was he ran free at Leopardstown for me and ended up finishing fourth, and I thought if we dropped him in today it would make all the difference, especially with 9st 13lb on his back," added the trainer. "The jockey himself has done nothing wrong. If they understood how difficult a ride this horse is they'd actually think the chap did a good job. "In fairness to Jason I think if he had pulled his stick out and given him a smack he would probably have ended up over the rails." Hanagan to miss Ebor Meanwhile champion jockey hopeful Paul Hanagan rode a Newcastle double but got a one-day riding ban which rules him out of the Ebor Handicap at York on 18 August. He scored on 5-2 joint favourite Sharp Eclipse and 2-1 chance Mufti to take his tally of winners to 115. But stewards handed him a one-day ban for using his whip with excessive frequency on Sharp Eclipse. An across-the-card double for title rival Ryan Moore leaves him still 13 behind Hanagan on 102 winners, with Richard Hughes on 101.
