Dettori treats racegoers to a flying dismount
Frankie Dettori delighted a big crowd at Chester with victory in the Dee Stakes on Epsom Derby entry Azmeel. The 7-2 chance, trained by John Gosden, wore down Doctor David to land the Group Three prize. Victory paid a compliment to Chabal who beat him - with Dettori on the winner - in Sandown's Classic Trial at Sandown. Favourite Harbinger, ridden by champion jockey Ryan Moore, won the Ormonde Stakes for Sir Michael Stoute by a length and a half from Age of Aquarius. Bookmakers reacted to Azmeel's victory by cutting him to 33-1 from 50s for the Derby, while Chabal is now rated at 14-1. Gosden added: "Frankie was keen on settling him a long way back and I'm afraid we got clipped over at the five-furlong marker. | 606: DEBATE |
"He's done well to come through and win the race. "I think we were beaten fair and square at Sandown, but he did get tired in the last furlong there. He went to Sandown about 80%. "He's come here at 95% today and, with a bit of luck, I might have him spot-on by the first week of June. "He's come here and handled Chester well and, from that point of view, there's no reason we shouldn't go to Epsom if the owner wants to go there."
