Richard Johnson pushes Planet of Sound to victory at Punchestown
Planet of Sound caused an upset by winning the Guinness Gold Cup at Punchestown, with favourite Denman coming in fourth. Trained by Philip Hobbs and ridden by Richard Johnson, Planet of Sound was in contention throughout and the 14-1 shot won by two-and-a-half lengths. War of Attrition was second in his final race with Cooldine third. Tony McCoy struggled to keep Denman straight from the start and the 5-2 chance had to settle for fourth. War of Attrition (20-1) finished his racing career in fine style, making a late charge to move into second while Cooldine (9-2) was also in the mix going over the last. Joncol was withdrawn just before the race due to the unsuitable ground while J'y Vole fell on the second circuit. "I'm chuffed to bits. He's always been a very nice horse but he's stayed on very well today," said Hobbs of Planet of Sound. "That was his first time over three miles but he definitely got the trip no problem. "He just made one mistake down the far side but apart from that, he jumped great. He's always looked very good but at Cheltenham (in the Ryanair) he choked so we put a tongue tie on him today. "He's been the forgotten horse today and I couldn't believe what price he was."
