Tony McCoy rides Albertas Run to victory in Cheltenham's Ryanair Chase
Cheltenham winner Albertas Run is among 23 horses to be withdrawn from the Grand National at Aintree on 10 April. Albertas Run, who won the Ryanair Chase last week, joins the likes of War Of Attrition, Taranis and Possol in being scratched as 75 remained in the race. Last year's Grand National winner Mon Mome, who finished third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, will carry 11st 7lb - an increase of 7lb on last year. Madison du Berlais and Notre Pere head the weights with 11st 10lb. Although out of the National, Albertas Run could still run at the Aintree meeting - either in the Totesport Bowl on 8 April or the Melling Chase the day after. Mon Mome, a surprise 100-1 winner of the National last year, is set to carry extra weight next month but trainer Venetia Williams says she will not be too concerned if that is the case. | 606: DEBATE |
"It's not the be all and end all," said Williams. "A horse can fall, you are always afraid of getting hampered, you never know what might happen. "His preparation has gone a lot better than it did last year and we have got a blueprint to follow. "We were all very buoyed by what we saw him do at Cheltenham. It might have been a bit cheeky running in the Gold Cup as a prep race for the National, but there was £50,000 for third place and we were delighted with what he did. "The hill at Cheltenham compensated for the extra mile he will get in the National." Only 40 horses will run in the event, with those on a weight of 10st 1lb or less not guaranteed to make the final field. Champion trainer Paul Nicholls is chasing a first National win and has Big Fella Thanks and Tricky Trickster as possible contenders. Williams has expressed her hope that Flintoff is able to get in. The horse, currently 49th on the list, is part owned by England cricketer Andrew Flintoff. "Flintoff has had a problem with his foot, but he's in good form and is doing his work well. I hope he gets in," she added. "There's no time for a prep run before the National for him now, but he was second in the Midlands Grand National last year first time out so we wouldn't be worried about going to Aintree fresh." Silver Birch, who won the 2007 National as a 33-1 shot with Robbie Power on board, needs 11 horses to come out of the race to be guaranteed a run. The 2008 winner Comply Or Die, who finished second last year, is certain of a place in the 2010 line-up. The other withdrawals from the latest entry stage are: Taranis, Our Vic, Casey Jones, Roulez Cool, Le Beau Bai, Seven Is My Number, Louping D'Ainay, Gone To Lunch, Kornati Kid, Follow The Plan, Cane Brake, New Alco, Parsons Pistol, Iris De Balme, Trust Fund, Coe, Mumbles Head, Sizing Australia, Trabolgan and Boychuk. The National is the only race in which weights are decided at the discretion of the British Horseracing Authority's Head of Handicapping, Phil Smith. This year's spectacle over the four-mile, four-furlong course at Aintree will have a record £925,000 prize fund.
