Notre Pere was a faller in the big feature race at Down Royal |
The Listener galloped away with the Group One JNWine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal after evens favourite Notre Pere fell. Nick Mitchell's campaigner, ridden by Andrew McNamara and sent off at 7-1, won by 15 lengths from My Will. It was Mitchell's biggest win as a trainer and a first success for The Listener since the Irish Hennessy at Leopardstown in February 2008. War of Attrition, Cheltenham Gold Cup winner in 2006, was third. McNamara set a gentle pace in the early stages due to the testing conditions, but he was joined at halfway by Notre Pere. However, just as Andrew Lynch asked the favourite for a big leap five out he clipped the top and came down, leaving the bold jumping grey in isolation. War Of Attrition and fellow British raiders Joe Lively and My Will tried to get involved but the mud-lover refused to buckle.
