Jersey Racing Club is calling on the public to support the races in the current tough economic times.

The club's first evening race meet of the season is at Les Landes on Friday night, however none of the five races have been sponsored.

Club secretary Julie Settle said: "We have had a couple of sponsors pull out which means that the race club has had to fund the prize money.

"It has been very difficult to find sponsors this year."

Settle admits the industry has been affected by the currently downturn and is calling on the Jersey public to come and support the local races.

"We are down 12 to 15 sponsors from last year.

"We are struggling a bit and are hoping that we are going to have lots and lots of people up there to support the racing."
