Walsh revels in 'incredible' week

Everything has gone right - Walsh

Ruby Walsh has hailed his triumphant week at the Cheltenham Festival which saw him retain his Leading Jockey title with a record-breaking seven wins.

The 29-year-old had already beaten the previous record of five wins at one Festival before climbing on board Kauto Star to reclaim the Gold Cup.

Walsh is now just one winner behind Pat Taaffe, who guided 25 horses to victory between 1954 and 1970.

"It's unbelievable, I hope I don't wake up and it's Tuesday morning," he said.

"It's been an incredible week, everything's gone right.

"Paul Nicholls' horses were flying, Willie Mullins' horses were flying and I've been lucky enough to be riding for the two of them.

"I've been on the right horses which usually isn't the case, everything's gone right and from the time Celestial Halo got chained in the Champion Hurdle we haven't looked back."

Walsh won three of the four championship events during the week and only missed out on the fourth as Celestial Halo finished second on the opening day.

Things had not started well for the Irishman as Tatenen crashed out of the Arkle Trophy, giving him a nasty fall.

However, after he rode Quevega to a 14-length victory in the closing race on Tuesday, there was no looking back.

A Grade One hat-trick followed on Wednesday as he first landed two winners with Mullins on board Mikael d'Haguenet in the Ballymore Novices' Hurdle and Cooldine the RSA Chase, while Nicholls' top-rated jumper Master Minded cruised to victory in the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Win number five came in Thursday's World Hurdle with Big Buck's and Walsh rode brilliantly on board American Trilogy to land the County Hurdle early on Friday.

But the undoubted highlight of the week was the return to form of Kauto Star, who showed his class to become the first horse to regain the Gold Cup, having lost to stablemate Denman last year.

That win was also Nicholls' fifth success of the week, leaving him to pick up the leading trainer award, but Walsh reserved special praise for nine-year-old Kauto who romped to a 13-length victory over Denman.

"I think he was the one horse that everyone wanted to win," he said.

"Racing wanted him to win, maybe it was a split with Denman again - he's such a wonderful horse as well - but he's an incredible horse and he got an incredible reception.

"He did everything the way you hoped he would. He travelled super, jumped super, quickened up when I want him to quicken up.

"He was in front sooner than I wanted him to be but that was only because he was jumping so well.

"He's an incredible horse to be riding and I'm very lucky to have the ride on him.

He added: "I thought when I rode him at Newbury, the first time I sat on him, that he could be a superstar - I've always thought he was and he's shown everyone else that he is."

Nicholls confirmed on Saturday that Kauto Star has run his final race of the season but his career is far from over.

"He could run in the next three Gold Cups if we keep him right and he stays injury free," said Nicholls. "He is nine now and could go on to 10, 11 or even 12.

"I know now he is better off being super fit and fresh, and when he is like that, he is lethal.

"He is such a professional. We got him home on Friday night and he ate up like he had just done a day's work."

Both Kauto Star and Denman posed at Nicholls' Ditcheat yard on Saturday morning, before being paraded into the village along with Gold Cup fourth Neptune Collonges, Master Minded, Big Buck's and Celestial Halo, to be greeted by a 1,000-strong crowd of well wishers

"It has been great this morning, talking to all sorts of people from different walks of life and seeing how much it means to them and it has been a great Festival for jump racing," added the trainer.

"Last year was quite hard as I was disappointed Kauto got beat and Denman won but there was none of that yesterday as Kauto won, which was brilliant, and Denman was a winner in defeat.

Nicholls added that Kauto would take a break and probably make his seasonal reappearance at Down Royal in November.

He added that Denman would probably be pencilled in for a return at Haydock the same month.

But not all of the Nicholls team are on their summer break

Master Minded could run at Sandown or Punchestown, if the ground is right, and Big Bucks could run at Aintree in the three-mile hurdle while Celestial Halo may be a contender for Punchestown.

My Will, fifth in the Gold Cup, is off to the Aintree Grand National while Neptune Collonges will head to the Guinness Gold Cup at Punchestown.
