Great Leighs forced to axe staff

Great Leighs racecourse
Great Leighs was Britain's first new racecourse since Taunton in 2007

Administrators acting for Great Leighs racecourse have made 17 members of staff redundant after deciding not to apply for a temporary licence.

Great Leighs, which has been open for less than 12 months, was placed into administration earlier this month.

The Essex track opened its doors 18 months behind schedule in April 2008.

The administrators have received a number of enquiries about taking over the course, with interested parties having to submit offers by 6 February.

The administrators said they "are not in detailed negotiations with any one specific party and that all avenues and expressions of interest continue to be explored".

Great Leighs has been beset by problems ever since the British Horseracing Board gave it the go-ahead in 2004.

The next four meetings scheduled for the venue have been moved to alternative venues.

The 5 February meeting will now be at Wolverhampton, while Kempton will host the fixtures on the 12th and 19th of the month.

The meeting on Sunday 15 February has been moved to Southwell.
