War storms to easy Irish triumph

War of Attrition
War of Attrition looks to have returned to form after a two-year absence

Former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner War of Attrition clinched his second straight win of the season, storming to victory in the Thurles Chase.

The Mouse Morris-trained 2-7 favourite was rarely troubled and took up the lead four fences from home.

Ridden by Davy Russell, he finished eight lengths clear of Carrigeen Kalmia in second with Rathgar Beau third.

Some bookmakers cut War of Attrition's odds to reclaim the Gold Cup, which he won in 2006, from 20-1 to 16-1.

War of Attrition won on his return from a two-year injury absence at Punchestown last month, finishing 19 lengths clear of another former Gold Cup winner, Kicking King.

"It's another step on the ladder and I just want to take small steps at a time," said Morris.

"He's in the John Durkan and the Betfair Chase and all the usual races, but I've nothing in my head at the moment. I'd prefer to wait until the morning to see how he is."

The 2009 Cheltenham Gold Cup is scheduled for Friday 13 March.
