Dettori claimed two victories aboard Raven's Pass and Donativum |
Britain-based Raven's Pass won the Breeders' Cup Classic as European horses dominated with a record five winners in the prestigious meeting. Frankie Dettori stormed home to claim the showpiece Classic race and complete his second victory of the day. He earlier rode Donativum to victory in the Juvenile Turf race. Conduit won the Breeders' Cup Turf, Muhannak claimed the Marathon, while Goldikova completed the sweep with a win in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Raven's Pass, trained in Newmarket by John Gosden, set a new track record to hugely upset the odds. Only Andre Fabre's Arcangues in 1993 had previously won the 10-furlong showpiece for Europe. "It doesn't get any better than this," said Gosden, who at one time trained in America. "With my wife and family based with me here [at Santa Anita] for 11 years it doesn't get any better and if you think it does get any better then you're a greedy so and so. | 606: DEBATE | "To me this is a dream come true and it's a day I will cherish for the rest of my life. He has trained beautifully and been more relaxed. I felt the trip wouldn't be a problem." Henrythenavigator, trained by Irishman Aidan O'Brien and ridden by John Velazquez, was second with US favourite and defending champion Curlin finishing fourth. Gosden's Donativum also surged home under Dettori to pip O'Brien's Westphalia by half a length in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Johnny Murtagh appeared to have done enough aboard the Champagne Stakes winner, but Dettori held his nerve to power through for an exciting finale. English St Leger champion Conduit, ridden by Ryan Moore, overtook Eagle Mountain in the final staight to give trainer Sir Michael Stoute his third victory in the one-and-a-half mile Breeders' Cup Turf race. Ralph Beckett's Muhannak was expertly ridden in the Breeders' Cup Marathon by Pat Smullen, who held off the attacking Church Service by a head, with Big Booster third. French-trained filly Goldikova claimed another spectacular win for the Europeans in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Muhannak and Pat Smullen stormed to a stunning win for Europe |
Olivier Peslier rode the filly - trained by France's Freddie Head - to its fourth consecutive victory. Defending champion Kip Deville came in second, while another Irish-bred runner Whatsthescript finished third. Desert Code overtook Diabolical in the final strides to win the inaugural Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint by half a length. Storm Treasure was another three-quarters of a length back in third. Midshipman gave jockey Garrett Gomez his third victory of the Breeders' Cup, winning the Juvenile race, with Square Eddie in second and Street Hero third. Gomez was also aboard Albertus Maximus as he charged home in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.
