Clowance has entered the Oaks picture with two Newbury wins |
Clowance, the 11-8 favourite, produced a second encouraging performance at Newbury this season to earn general quotes of 10-1 for the Oaks at Epsom. The Roger Charlton-trained filly, who won a 1m 2f maiden in April, doubled up with another win over that distance. Steve Drowne had the winning ride, beating Kotsi into second while Hobby finished third in the seven-runner Swettenham Stud Filles Trial Stakes. Lush Lashes and Katiyra remained market leaders for the Classic on 6 June. Friday's race at Newbury represented the final clue ahead of the Oaks, and Clowance's price did shorten after her win. But she is likely to remain more a lively outsider than one of the top contenders for the race. Always travelling smoothly under Drowne, Clowance made her move two furlongs out, quickened nicely and beat the second favourite, ridden by Jamie Spencer, by 1 lengths. The daughter of Montjeu is bred to come into her own over middle distances and trips in excess of this distance are likely to be well within her compass. Charlton said: "The owner is very keen to go to the Oaks. "She just gallops and stays and when she hit the front, she didn't do a lot. She'll need to improve on that but she should do so."
