Spencer is in contention for this season's champion jockey crown |
Champion jockey contender Jamie Spencer is considering not racing for the title next year unless prize money improves. The 26-year-old is vying with Seb Sanders for this year's crown.
But he is unhappy with the rewards and told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Prize money levels just don't make it viable to chase up and down the country to do it.
"It's not that I'm not hungry to ride winners. I just think that financially it's suicide to chase around all year unless you have a big sponsor."
Spencer rode two winners at Ayr and two at Wolverhampton on Friday to take a 175-171 lead in the flat riders' championship.

However at Wolverhampton he was hit with what could prove a costly suspension for using his whip with excessive force, meaning he will be sidelined on 6 and 7, with just 14 days left in the season.
Spencer says two wins at a meeting are the minimum a jockey requires to break even.
"Frankie Dettori said to me 'how will you explain to the taxman you've got no money when you're champion?" he said.
"It's just not financially viable, and at the end of it all, if you win you get a trophy, and if you don't you win nothing. It's a thankless task."
Spencer was stable jockey for Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle in 2004 but he resigned in early 2005 after a difficult season.
He went on to win the champion jockey title in 2005 for the first time with 163 victories.
