Red Evie (right) holds off Passager's challenge |
Red Evie's well-timed run earned victory in an exciting finish to the Group One Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. Ridden by Jamie Spencer, the 8-1 shot overhauled Passager in the final strides and held off the fast-finishing Ramonti for the 114,000 first prize.
Last year's winner Peeress was sent off the 11-8 favourite and looked as if she might threaten two furlongs out.
But she failed to find the required turn of foot to get competitive and her challenge fizzled out.
It was another successful campaign-opener for the Michael Bell-trained four-year-old, who won her first seven races last season.
Bell said after the race that Red Evie would now be aimed at the Queen Anne Stakes at next month's Royal Ascot.
