Greenwich Meantime was third in the 2006 Chester Cup |
Greenwich Meantime overcame a high draw to take the Chester Cup from well-backed favourite Fair Along. Paul Hanagan steered his winning mount, a 14-1 chance trained by Richard Fahey, from stall 16 to take an early inside line and see out the 2m 2f trip well.
Earlier, former champion trainer Henry Cecil continued his revival by winning the Cheshire Oaks with Light Shift.
Cecil, a 10-time champion between 1976 and 1993, also trains the Epsom Oaks favourite Passage of Time.
In the 120,000 Chester Cup, Greenwich Meantime saw off a typically gutsy challenge from Fair Along (11-2), who was second over the jumps in the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham in March.
Enjoy The Moment (13-1) took third, with the 25-1 chance Under The Rainbow claiming fourth.
Hanagan, born in nearby Warrington, said: "The strong gallop suited him. He loves to come from behind.
"I used to come here with my dad when I was six - it's great."
On day one of the popular May meeting, Light Shift was an impressive winner of the Cheshire Oaks.
The 11-8 favourite, ridden by Ted Durcan, finished three-quarters of a length clear from All My Loving, with Fashion Statement in third.
Light Shift, owned by the Niarchos family, may now head for the Oaks at Epsom on 1 June where she has been cut to a general 12-1 shot from 16s.
Stablemate Passage of Time is currently the 7-2 market leader.
