Fallon has never ridden in the Melbourne Cup before |
Irish flat jockey Kieren Fallon has been granted a local licence in Australia which will allow him to ride Yeats in the Melbourne Cup next month. Fallon is banned from riding in the UK after being charged with conspiracy to defraud, which he denies.
However, the 41-year-old, who has never ridden in Australia, took up Racing Victoria's offer to apply for a licence, which was given on Wednesday.
"Racing Victoria has passed Kieren's application," read a statement.
Yeats has won both the Ascot Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup this season, with Fallon riding him to victory in the former.
Fallon's mount will be aiming to become only the third European-based horse to win the event in 146 years after Vintage Crop (1993) and Media Puzzle (2002).
The prize money for the Group One event at Flemington Park on 7 November is 2m (A$5.1m).
Last month, Fallon opted not to apply to ride in America so will not be taking part in the prestigious Breeders' Cup meeting on 28 October.
