George Washington may now head to the Breeders Cup in America |
George Washington put in a five-star show to win the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. Jockey Michael Kinane kept the 13-8 favourite at the back of the field early on as he waited for the gaps to open ahead of him.
But as soon as Kinane started his charge, the Aidan O'Brien-trained ace was able to exert his superiority.
The 2,000 Guineas winner went on to claim an emphatic win with Araafa battling on well for second.
"He is an unbelievably special horse and is so exciting to have," said trainer O'Brien.
"Mick (Kinane) said he was just half-speeding and he was always going to take his time on him.
"He was in no panic and he just followed them through - he rode him like it was a nice bit of work.
"He's very good, he always was. Everyone saw what he did as a two-year-old - it's still there and more.
"If he's well tomorrow and the coming days we'd love to go to the Breeders' Cup."
In the other Group One race on the card, Darryll Holland was forced to dig deep on Simply Perfect to win the Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile.
Holland's mount, who went off at 11-4, attacked with just over two furlongs to go in what had been a slowly-run race at the start. Although Treat, ridden by Jamie Spencer, battled hard, she could not get past the winner.
