Yeats surprised in Irish St Leger
Kieren Fallon was aboard Yeats at the Curragh
Yeats won the Goodwood Cup and Ascot Cup this year
Kastoria upset the form book to beat odds-on favourite Yeats in the Irish Field St Leger at the Curragh.

Mick Kinane, who rode Yeats to victory in the horse's last outing at the Goodwood Cup, unleashed Kastoria with a late run to pip Yeats by half a length.

Kieren Fallon took Yeats to the front with five furlongs left but Kastoria, the race's only filly, stayed in touch and came through with a late burst.

The Whistling Teal, a 20-1 shot, was a distant third of the seven runners.

"The race was made for her today," said Kinane after his victory on the John Oxx-trained horse.

Yeats' defeat means trainer Aidan O'Brien remains without a win in the Irish St Leger.

"I thought we would run Yeats close as her homework has been terrific lately and she was receiving 3lb," said Oxx.

"We expected a big run - we couldn't expect to beat Yeats but felt we could run him close."

Oxx may now aim Kastorial at the Canadian International next month.

The pace was a little bit iffy and maybe he peaked early in the season

"I'm not sure how much longer she will go on or whether His Highness (the Aga Khan) will keep her in training next year."

Yeats was pushed out to 8-1 from 6-1 for the Emirates Melbourne Cup at Flemington in November after the defeat.

Aidan O'Brien said: "I don't want to take anything away from the winner, but the pace was a little bit iffy and maybe he peaked early in the season."

Asked if the Melbourne Cup was still on the agenda, the Ballydoyle trainer added: "We'll have to see."

Oxx and Kinane were completing a 62-1 big-race double having earlier taken the C.L. Weld Park Stakes with Arch Swing (8-1).

Pushed to the front a furlong and a half out, the filly burst clear to beat Silk Dress by four and a half lengths, with Impetious third.

Arch Swing is 20-1 for the Stan James 1000 Guineas.

"She's in the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp but it's in two weeks' time and I'd prefer if it were three, but we'll see," added Oxx.
