Notnowcato (right) pipped Kew Green for victory |
Notnowcato produced a late run under jockey Mick Kinane to deny Kew Green in the Weatherbys Earl of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket's Craven meeting. Kew Green, having his first run in a Group race, looked to have made a winning move when kicking for home two furlongs out.
But 5-2 second favourite Notnowcato, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, proved to have too much finishing speed and powered past for a one-and-a-quarter-length win.
Tolpuddle, at 12-1, was third.
Winning trainer Stoute said: "All winners are good and it's nice to get a first Group winner of the season under the belt.
"Notnowcato did his winning at eight furlongs last year and we stepped him up to nine today. I think a mile-and-a-quarter is within his compass - he indicated that today - so we've got some options.
"He is a very professional and tough horse. We'll now take him home and see how he is. We don't have a plan at the moment."
Misu Bond won the European Free Handicap to boost his 2,000 Guineas credentials, for which is now a best-priced 50-1 shot.
The three-year-old, trained by Bryan Smart, lost a shoe in the pre-parade ring and then another down by the start, requiring two sessions with the racecourse farrier.
But the 5-2 favourite, ridden by Tony Culhane, kept his composure and stayed on strongly in the seven-furlong race to hold off the late challenge of Jeremy by a neck.
Advanced, trained by Roger Charlton, was third.
Notnowcato was Wednesday's Five Live tip.
