The odds-on French favourite Hurricane Run came through late to capture the Irish Derby at the Curragh. The 4-5 shot came from last, under the guidance of Kieren Fallon, but he had to fight to the line to beat Aidan O'Brien's Scorpion (25-1).
But the race was marred by the death of Gypsy King, who had finished fifth in the Epsom Derby earlier in June.
O'Brien's runner suffered a shoulder injury and veered out of the race and was later put down.
Scorpion had led turning for home but Fallon, bidding for his first Irish Derby win, brought his mount through to take the lead in the final 100 yards.
The 16-1 chance Shalapour, ridden by Fran Berry, was third.
It was a second Irish Derby win for French trainer Andre Fabre, who was overjoyed with the success.
"It was a real battle but this is his first real race with good solid pace and he still has lots to learn. I'm really delighted with this win," said Fabre.
Fallon was also impressed with his mount, the son of Montjeu, who had been well-fancied in the betting.
"He was free and easy throughout the race but when I asked him to quicken he did it well," said Fallon.
There was no luck for Walk In The Park, who was second in the Epsom Derby but found the pace difficult to handle and finished well back.
