Shamardal just held off Hurricane Run's late challenge |
Shamardal landed a French Classic double when winning the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) at Chantilly. The Godolphin colt, who captured the French 2,000 Guineas last month, held off a devastating late challenge from odds-on favourite Hurricane Run.
Laverock, a 40-1 shot was third past the post in the race, cut from 12 to 10 furlongs this year.
But he was demoted to sixth after a stewards' inquiry with Rocamadour promoted to third from fourth.
The amendment to the finishing order came after some scrimmaging in the home straight.
Rocamadour, trained by Mick Channon and ridden by Ted Durcan, had been the only supplementary entry for the race.

Victory was some compensation for jockey Frankie Dettori, who had had another fruitless ride in the English Derby at Epsom on Saturday.
Dettori, enjoying his second win in the French Derby, had taken up the running early on, a tactic agreed beforehand by the Godolphin team.
"He doesn't have to be in front, but we looked at the race beforehand and couldn't see much early pace, so we agreed with Frankie to try and make it again," said Simon Crisford, Godolphin racing manager.
"He has definitely improved since the Guineas and he was beautifully relaxed in front.
"We're inclined to keep him to a mile or a mile and a quarter, which brings in races like the Eclipse and the Juddmonte, although he has plenty of options and a lot of entries."
Hurricane Run, who would have crossed the line first had the race been a few strides longer, could now go for the Irish Derby, which sets up a potential clash with Epsom Derby winner Motivator.
