Silent Witness' success sparked chaotic scenes at Sha Tin racecourse |
Hong Kong's Silent Witness sprinted to his 17th consecutive victory to set a new world record winning streak. The five-year-old gelding romped home by a length in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup at the Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong.
His success sees him overhaul his great-great grandfather Ribot, who starred in the 1950s, and former stars Cigar and Citation.
The Tony Cruz-trained horse was the world's top sprinter on turf in 2004.
Silent Witness looked to be flagging in the closing stages of the race.
But though his three-length lead going into the final straight was eaten up by the unfancied Town of Fionn, South African jockey Felix Coetzee ensured the champion just held on.
The record-breaking victory sparked wild celebrations at the racetrack and the meeting ended in chaos as hundreds of fans were crushed in a surge to claim souvenirs, according to local media.
Reports said at least 21 people had to be treated by course medics or at hospital for minor injuries.
