Irish challenger Democratic Deficit held on bravely to cause a shock in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket. The Jim Bolger-trained horse, ridden by Kevin Manning, staked his claim for the 2000 Guineas in the traditional trial.
The 12-1 chance dropped out to the back to avoid trouble, but came through well to take the lead within the final furlong after being moved out.
Rob Roy, who failed to get a clear run, finished second, just ahead of the long-shot Kandidate.
Iceman, another who had little room to negotiate on the Rowley Mile, was a fast-finishing fourth but the favourite Etlaala was a major disappointment and finished last.
"There wasn't much pace on and he was fresh and a bit free early on, as he hadn't run for a while," said Manning
"He quickened well from a slow pace and I got a clear run down the outside and missed all the trouble."
Rob Roy's trainer Sir Michael Stoute said the 2000 Guineas on 30 April would be next for his charge, who is around a 7-1 chance for the race.
"I am very pleased with him. It was a messy race but one positive out of it
is that he will have learnt a bit."
John Gosden was happy with the effort of Iceman, saying: "He ran a blinder.
He was a bit fresh early on and never really got a run. He loved the mile and he loved the track.
"For a trial I couldn't be happier, but I don't want to get shut in next time."
