Clan Royal to take season break
Tony McCoy on Clan Royal
Clan Royal failed to finish the 2005 Grand National
Trainer Jonjo O'Neill has revealed that Clan Royal will not run again this season and will be trained specifically for next year's Grand National.

The 10-year-old was second to Amberleigh House last year but suffered even worse fortune on Saturday.

While leading under Tony McCoy, he was carried out by a loose horse on the run to Becher's on the second circuit.

"He's finished for the season and I hope we can try again for next year's National," said O'Neill.

"He was in grand form on Sunday morning, bucking and kicking in the field, and next season I think I'll keep him to hurdles as I intended doing this winter."

Frank Berry, owner JP McManus' racing manager, was also disappointed with Clan Royal's departure from the race.

"It was a long way from home but you'd have liked to see him getting a run," he said.

"He was jumping great, looked to be travelling well and enjoying himself.

"It was just one of those things, typical of what happens in the Grand National.

"He always runs keen around there. He was very keen there last year as well, he just takes a bit of settling."
