Bailey hit the front at the final turn and held off Flower Alley and Perfect Drift for his fifth win in the Classic.

"If this is my last Breeders' Cup race, then it's a great way to go out," said Bailey, who is considering retirement.

British filly Ouija Board was denied a repeat win in the Filly and Mare Turf by 15-1 outsider Intercontinental.

Ouija Board's trainer Ed Dunlop, who may now send the filly to the Japan Cup on 27 November, said: "We were very proud of her performance."

There were no British winners at the eight-race meeting, where prize money topped $15m (�8.4m).

In the Classic, Luca Cumani's Starcraft was a contender until the final turn, but Oratorio and Jack Sullivan failed to impress.

Bailey, 48, was clocking up his 15th Breeders' Cup win as he brought St Liam home to claim the first prize of $4.7m (�2.6m).

The Turf race was dominated by the Europeans.

The German-bred Shirocco, now trained in France by Andre Fabre, held off the challenge of Irish duo Ace and Azamour.

It was a first Breeders' Cup win for Shirocco's Belgian-born, French-based jockey Christophe Soumillon.

France's Bago finished fourth, ahead of the best-placed American horse, English Channel.

In the Distaff, favourite Ashado came third behind Pleasant Home and Society Selection, while Artie Schiller rallied from fifth to beat the highly-fancied Leroidesanimaux in the Mile.

One of the main talking points of the day was the demise of Lost in the Fog's unbeaten record in the Sprint.

Silver Train beat Taste of Paradise by a head after Lost in the Fog, who had led going in to the straight, faltered to finish seventh.

Stevie Wonderboy claimed the Juvenile contest and Folklore coming home first in the Juvenile Fillies' race.
